What is This!

Excited and ready to go, my first day trying to accomplish a flattering style with my natural hair that complimented my face was what I consider to be an ...EPIC FAIL!

End result

How did this happen? Well let's start from the beginning. After making the decision to do better by my hair I went to YouTube and typed in natural hair. The first video I saw was an tutorial on how to get "cute heat-less summer curls" it was a nice style "ON HER" and looked fairly easy to accomplish, so I decided to try it. According to Toni (I believe that is her name) the only products needed was the following:

  1.  Design Essentials Natural Curl Enhancing Mousse

  2.  Design Essentials Natural Twist and Set Setting Lotion

  3.  Perm Rods( purchase according to length and thickness of hair)
So I went to Walmart (only because it's practically next door to me) and purchased some setting lotion and mousse. I already had the Fantasia hair polisher and frizz buster from my hair straightening days. What is pictured below sums up all the products used...Oh I almost forgot Walmart did not have perm rods so I purchased the next best thing they had...you will see the photo below

Okay great I have the products now I'm ready for business. According to Toni from MyNaturalSistas vlog, I was to work with damp hair so of course I washed, conditioned, and entangled. Now I needed to part my hair in small sections apply the setting lotion and mousse. Now proceed to twist my hair then use the perm rod to curl the hair. of course I did not have perm rods so I had to use what I had

Sleeping in curlers was a terrible experience

After I completed all the steps on my entire head I put on my satin strip and head cloth...
(sorry no photo of that will have one next time) and went to bed. the next morning I was ecstatic, I could not wait to see how my hair turned out...not to mention I wanted to take out those rollers...

My first thought after taking out all the rollers was "oh no...it's so tight"

This is after I took the twist lose and realized that my style was not going to look like hers
By the third day it looked like this
Was able to stretch those curls but lost the definition

Dry with no curls :-(

Needless to say that style did not do me any justice it was so tight and just looked like a many Afro...goodness.. I thought my hair was long enough to carry that style but boy was I wrong... :-)
here is the link to see how it is suppose to look...lol... who know.s maybe it will work for you Heat less super cute summer curls

Oh well on with the next one...

Bondage No More

I am that girl who loves straight long hair so when I made the decision March 2010 to take the steps needed to become natural was major for me, but I thought hey I can train it to be straight… so the transition began.  The first couple of months were okay but by the eight month mark the two different textures of hair became difficult to manage. That’s when I began to contemplate yes you guessed it the “big cut”. When I finally got the nerve to cut it the stylist refused and said “you got the wrong one” so I kind of lost my nerve and confidence to do it and instead got it cut right below my ear and continued at that length until all the relaxer was chopped….But what comes after that…

Today I have been natural for three years but in no way does my hair look anyway near the thickness, length or health level of those inspiring videos I have seen on YouTube. Basically in the three years I have been natural I have worn two styles straight hair or hair pulled into a ponytail I feel that I am still restricted with limitations that I impose on myself. I am in bondage to my hair well no more I am determined to learn how to manage this hair of mind while stepping outside my comfort zone…i.e. fear of not having straight hair.

Pictured below is a little of my journey up until now:

Me with relaxed hair 2009
My favorite go to style 05/2013
This is how I would normally wear it 08/2013
The above photos sums up my hair journey...lol...But Three days ago began a new one,,,hope you come along for what I am sure to be a bumpy ride...
